Kyoto has many sights to see, be it the magical red gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine, or the ancient splendor of Kiyomizudera. Head out west on the train or taxi, and you’ll be at probably the most iconic location in the mystical city. One that probably pops up first if you search for Kyoto online!
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, to give it it’s full name, is simply a vision to behold. The sprawling network of bamboo poles as far as the eyes can see. Towering meters above, the grove itself is cloaked in shadow, with rays of sun peeking throughout the gaps. The forest is part of the bigger Arashiyama area, and if you have some time to spare, the local railways can take you out into to serene cliffside vistas and rivers that the area offers.
Obviously the bamboo forest catches the attention of most visitors. The photographs you see online may feature a calm, quite corner of the Kyoto countryside, but it is any but! Expect visitors to be packed in the narrow pathway, you may need to be quick in getting your photos, or wait for a gap in the crowds. It’s highly recommended to visit in the early hours of the morning if you really want some peace, with its distant position in the outskirts of town, it wont be as hectic.
It’s free to visit the forest, so no admission fees or ticketing to be worried about. There are further little landmarks dotted in the wider vicinity, so take you time and take in the idyllic sights and sounds of the neighborhood, and pop by the local stores for some unique gifts.
I have a lot of amazing photos to share, and you can see a few below! Have you enjoyed the wonders of Kyoto?
