In Spain, Parque de El Retiro

If you’re looking at a map of Madrid, when planning your trip to the Spanish capital, Retiro Park will instantly catch your eye.

Covering almost 1.5km, the park, on the eastern side of the city centre, is full of sights and sounds. The Great Pond of El Retiro is one of the main attractions, close to the main entrance. On a calm morning, you’ll find joggers and ever rowers, making use of the location. The striking Monument to Alfonso XII is also here, which can’t be missed!

If you’re up for a bit more exploring, you can find yourself at the Palacio de Cristal (The Crystal Palace), this vintage glasshouse dating back to 1887 is open to the public, hosting various exhibitions throughout the year. The Rose Garden in the south of the park is also worth a visit if you’re in Madrid during the Summer, as it was February when I went, there….wasn’t much to see!
