The Majestic Castelo de Sao Jorge in Lisbon
Perched up high upon the hills of Lisbon and overlooking the charming streets of the Portuguese capital is the fortress of Castelo de Sao Jorge. Whether you choose to embark on the demanding hike up the narrow streets of the historic town center or opt for the simpler route using the elevator, visiting the castle is a must when in Lisbon.
The walk up offers a great opportunity to fit in some cardio, taking about half an hour from the start. Along the way, you’ll pass by several charming boutiques and inviting cafes, often frequented by tourists making their way up or down. It’s a pleasant way to combine exercise with the chance to explore local businesses and perhaps pick up some souvenirs or treats.

Seeing as I didn’t buy a ticket in advance, there was a queue, but it moved along fairly quickly. Though it may be easier to wait if you pick up some Gelato from the nearby shops to enjoy!
The main entrance of the castle provides a direct path onto the ancient walls, punctuated with weathered cannons that once stood as stalwart defenders of the fortress. The panoramic views of Lisbon from this vantage point are nothing short of breathtaking. Below, the charming orange rooftops of the town center are nestled against the backdrop of the vast Atlantic waters, creating a picturesque scene that captures the essence of this coastal city. In the distance, the magnificent 25 April suspension bridge commands attention as it spans the river, while the iconic figure of Cristo Rei looms in the horizon.

As you work your way around the surrounding fortifications, and into the inner gardens, make sure to keep an eye out for the several wild Peacocks going on their afternoon stroll! Though be careful not to invade their space. After passing through the garden, you can enter the castle itself. Do keep it in mind that there are several narrow, steep stairs, and a few spots along the walls that may cause some nerves if you are not keen with heights!
On a clear sunny day, as the golden sun casts its warm glow over the landscapes, you can enjoy mile-long views in all directions from the castle grounds. The expansive vista stretches as far as the eye can see, offering a breathtaking experience for visitors. However, amidst the stunning scenery, it’s important to mind your step, especially as there can be crowds of people bustling around the narrow tracks. It adds an energetic buzz to the atmosphere, but caution is always key to a safe and enjoyable visit.

Once you’ve explored the castle grounds and taken in the panoramic views, departing from this enchanting site leads you to the other side of the castle. You’ll find yourself looping back round to the main entrance, following the trails of fellow explorers and curious adventurers.
