The futuristic skyline of Singapore boasts an iconic array of silhouettes, each contributing to the city’s unique charm. One of these striking silhouettes is the Singapore Flyer, gracefully poised just off the bustling Marina Bay, standing tall at a majestic 165m. While the Singapore Flyer was once proudly hailed as the highest ferris wheel in the world, newer attractions have now surpassed its height, yet it continues to hold the distinction of being the largest ferris wheel in Asia.
Though the flyer may not seem too impressive from a distance, the experience changes dramatically when you’re up close, standing at its base. It’s fascinating how the surrounding tall buildings somewhat diminish the apparent size of the wheel, but as you approach, you realize it’s quite imposing, much like the iconic London Eye. While the tickets may seem a bit steep, especially in a city known for its higher costs, they include admission to the captivating Time Capsule exhibition, a prelude to the exhilarating ride. This insightful exhibition showcases the remarkable journey of the city-state, from its modest beginnings to its current stature as a global powerhouse, providing visitors with a deeper appreciation for the rich history and vibrancy of Singapore.
Due to the presence of other larger attractions, the flyer isn’t really that busy, so you can show up on the day and likely get a ticket from the kiosks. We got there just in time for sunset, and the crowds weren’t too busy. The wheel itself takes about 30 minutes for a full rotation, so there is no rush to get the best spot or time for pictures. The view from above really does show the port nature of the city, away from the modern skyscrapers, and striking Gardens by the Bay, you can see the vast ports and ships awaiting in the distance, the backbone to the rapid rise of the country.
The Singapore Flyer, as the iconic wheel is known, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city’s skyline, making it an essential stop for tourists and locals alike. While the distance from the nearest MRT station may require a bit of a stroll, the journey presents the opportunity to take in the surrounding sights and immerse oneself in the vibrant energy of the city. Whether it’s the stunning architecture of Marina Bay Sands or the sweeping vistas from the Flyer’s observation deck, both vantage points offer unique perspectives of the cityscape, enriching the overall experience of exploring this captivating destination.
