Perched high atop the mountains of Phuket is magnificent Big Bhudda, clad in marble, overseeing the island and its citizens, the monument is a treasured icon of Thailand, and it’s hard not to see why. The breathtaking views from this vantage point allow visitors to take in the stunning natural beauty of Phuket, with its lush greenery, crystal-clear waters, and mesmerising sunsets.

Phuket is surprisingly huge, especially when you consider the diversity of its landscapes and attractions. During our visit, we were based near the airport, which made for a convenient location, but also meant that the car ride to the monument was over an hour away. However, this unexpectedly long journey turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it gave us the opportunity to enjoy a lovely drive through the picturesque Thai countryside, passing by charming villages and stunning beaches along the way. As you take the final winding ascent up to the impressive statue, the hillside unfolds before you, dotted with several quaint cafes perched over the lush forest below. The atmosphere is serene and inviting, and if you’re feeling adventurous, it’s well worth stopping by for a quick rest and a refreshing beverage, while taking in the breathtaking views that surround you.

The Big Buddha, located in a serene setting, has quickly become a landmark attracting visitors from all over the world. Its construction, completed a mere 10 years ago, represents a modern marvel nestled amidst traditional surroundings. The glistening marble facade, meticulously maintained, is a testament to the dedication of those who brought this vision to life.

As visitors approach the main entrance, they are greeted by a convenient car park, making the journey easily accessible. While ascending to the statue, guests are welcomed by a variety of stalls and stands offering an array of souvenirs, refreshments, and cultural artifacts. It is advisable to stay hydrated, especially during warmer days, and to dress appropriately for the occasion. In case visitors require additional clothing for cultural or practical reasons, body coverings are readily available, ensuring a respectful and comfortable experience for all.


The view from high up the mountain is simply breathtaking, especially during the early hours of the morning when the first rays of sunlight paint the surroundings in a warm, golden hue. As you gaze out, you can see the lush, verdant landscape unfolding below, with pockets of mist gently caressing the valleys. The view stretches from all across the island, offering a panoramic vista that extends towards the mesmerizing blue azure of the Andaman Sea, where the tranquil waters meet the horizon in a seamless blend of colors.
The route functions as a one-way system, with attentive staff ensuring that visitors do not cause any traffic by wandering around, preserving the peaceful ambiance of the surroundings. Therefore, take your time to immerse yourself in the natural beauty and appreciate the stunning landscapes before continuing your ascent. As you approach the Bhudda, you’ll realize that the statue is deceptively large, with its serene gaze and imposing presence commanding reverence. Taking a leisurely walk around its perimeter, you’ll encounter various intricately crafted statues and symbols, each offering a glimpse into the rich history and cultural significance of the religion and the country. Whether it’s the serene expressions of the statues or the nuanced details that adorn the site, every step unveils a deeper connection to the spirituality and heritage of the area.

There are several panoramic viewpoints dotted around the statue, each offering breathtaking vistas of the island and its surrounding waters. You can savour the stunning scenery and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area before beginning your descent. Additionally, the location of the Big Buddha provides a fantastic starting point for a comprehensive exploration of Phuket. After visiting the iconic site, you can venture to the charming old town of Phuket, just a short drive away, and discover its rich history and vibrant local culture.
