When you think of New York City, the iconic Brooklyn Bridge often comes to mind—its towering spires, intricate design, and connection between the intensity of Manhattan and trendy vibes or Brooklyn. But beyond the bridge itself lies a neighbourhood that’s become a must-visit: DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). With its cobblestone streets, art galleries, chic cafes, and unbeatable skyline views, DUMBO offers the perfect complement to a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.
Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is an experience in itself, especially if you’re coming from the Manhattan side. The pedestrian path isn’t always clearly marked, so keep your eyes peeled and trust your instincts to find the starting point—it’s easy to get disoriented, as the expressway runs beneath the bridge!
I highly recommend starting your walk early in the morning. The soft, golden light of the rising sun bathes the bridge in a magical glow, while the Financial District skyscrapers gleam to your right. The 20-minute stroll across the bridge is perfect for enjoying the views, snapping photos, and taking in the vibe of the city. You’ll likely find yourself stopping frequently to admire the scenery or people-watch along the way!
Once you reach the Brooklyn side, make sure to take the stairs down into the charming DUMBO neighborhood—otherwise, you’ll have to take the long way around! DUMBO is famous for its iconic view of the Manhattan Bridge, framed perfectly between the streets. If you walk a little further, you’ll reach Brooklyn Bridge Park, a peaceful green space that offers stunning panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline. Fortunately for me, I had the perfect weather that day—clear blue skies, which made for incredible photos!
When you’re ready to head back, you have two options: hop on the subway from the Brooklyn side, or simply walk back across the bridge like I did!
