Tucked away in the vibrant Kampong Glam district, Haji Lane is a hidden gem that bursts with colour, character, and creativity. This narrow alleyway might seem unassuming at first glance, but step inside and you’ll find yourself in a world of eclectic boutiques, quirky cafés, and ever-changing street art. Whether you’re a first-time traveler or a local on a staycation, Haji Lane offers the perfect blend of heritage and hip, making it a must-visit spot in Singapore.
While the glitz and glamour of Marina Bay often steal the spotlight when you think of Singapore, it’s easy to forget that there’s so much more to this small garden state. Getting to this colourful neighbourhood from Downtown is simple — just hop on the efficient MRT and head to Bugis station. From there, it’s only a short 10-minute walk to your destination!
We arrived early in the morning, so most of the cafés and shops were still closed. But not the quirky stores filled with funky photo booths — something we don’t see much of back home in the UK! We took our time enjoying the airplane-themed booths, which were cleverly designed to look just like an aircraft cabin. Wandering through the vivid alleyways, with their bold murals and street art, was a stark (and refreshing) contrast to the sleek, modern skyscrapers by the bay — a pleasant change of pace indeed.
For lunch, we stumbled upon a lovely Indonesian restaurant nearby called Kulon. We’d never tried Indonesian cuisine before, but it was absolutely delicious — and now we’re seriously considering a holiday there! As the weather started heating up, we grabbed some iced lemonade to cool down before heading off to one of the main attractions in the neighbourhood: Sultan Mosque. With its golden dome and intricate design, it gleams proudly in the heart of the area. Visitors are welcome outside of prayer times, and it’s definitely worth stepping inside.
I’m so glad I had the chance to explore this part of Singapore — it’s often overlooked in typical travel itineraries. If you’re looking for something a little different, with charm, culture, and character, Haji Lane absolutely deserves a spot on your list!
